Gnu Eclectic Reader - Summary
This group is not part of the GNU Project.
Public schools are paying big money for reading management programs. A dominant seller is Accelerated Reader. This is largely a library of tests that students take on the computer after reading a book. The test library is coupled with a filing system that records test results and accumulates points for books read. Statistical information is available and can be printed out as hard copy reports.
This project envisions a functional clone for AR, that is a free program that will do as many of the AR functions as are useful. This involves building a substantial test library (only 321 volumes as of 11/12/05), firming up the file system, and arranging for hard copy printouts. The filing system is largely in place; the program can actually be used if on-screen reports will do. The immediate task is to write in the hard-copy routines and build the library. Low tech and non-tech volunteers could do the test writing very well; I'm afraid I need someone who knows what she's doing on the printing functions.
