In the tropics, the roof tends to be the dominant conduit of solar heat into single-story buildings.  And, unless perched alone on a mountaintop, the roof is also the dominant source of radiative cooling.  Roofs, then, are an important part of the thermal design for tropical buildings.

Accurate modeling of the net flow of thermal-infrared radiation to and from a roof turns out to be complicated, involving tropospheric radiative-transfer integrals and high-resolution atmospheric transparency data.

SimRoof is the first program to do this modeling for the variety of conditions experienced through the typical-meteorological-years available from the "National Solar Radiation Data Base" http://rredc.nrel.gov/solar/old_data/nsrdb/1991-2005/tmy3/.

SimRoof models one square meter of a horizontal roof instead of a whole prototypical building.  The performance of this low-slope roof component can be applied to any building in which it is installed in the calculated TMY region.
