It seems the capability being asked here is best done
via a pre-processing step of data before mhonarc sees it.
It may be possible to utilize mhonarc's callback API to
to get desired results, but it would not be as simple.

I would feel much more comfortable if the message body+sender+receiver(s)+subject+time would be used for digest creation and if these digests would be put into each html file. I see no other way to reliably reference a message than by its content because it is exactly that what one wants to identify primarily.

How easy would it be to add a "--add-digests" option which does that? Maybe I have some time in two weeks.

If Digest::MD5 is installed, the message-id is based upon
the md5 digest of the message header. In general, this
should provide uniqueness (and re-creatability), but it
is possible to get two separate message with same ID if
the header text is the same.

If Digest::MD5 is not installed, than the created message-id
is not re-creatable if the archive is regen'ed from source
data (a combination of process ID, time, and counter is used).

Remember, mhonarc only creates its on message-id if none0
is present. Any message-id created with mhonarc will
be "<local-part>".

BTW, only the header data is available at the time the
message-id is created. For optimization reasons, mhonarc
does not read the complete message since conditions exist
that may indicate that the message should not be processed
(examples: already archived, MSGEXCFILTER, no-archive flag).

How do you create the checksum? Why isn't it easy to create the checksum from the original plain text message or body?

If the original message-id does not exist, mhonarc auto-creates
one. However, if auto-created, it may not be the same if
an archive is re-created from the original messages.

If this may be an issue for you, you can pre-process the
messages to verify that there is a message-id, and if not,
create one before mhonarc sees it.

It is used simply as a message id.

Does the X-Message-Id entry exist in every html message file generated by mhonarc?

Will you provide more information about your request and
what exactly you are trying to achieve. For example,
how is the sha1sum being used?

I'd like to have message digests of the original messages stored along with the outputted html files. I need them to reliably reference the single messages.

See, for example, there:

The last 40 digits are the sha1sum create from the html part between the pre-tags. That is of course not a reliable way to do that because the formatting may change upon the next conversion run.

btw.: having a charset encoding definition at hand in each file wouldn't be too bad either.

Great work! Thx!
