Description:

  Mall Of Freedom.
A web based package management system.

Distributions of GNU/Linux typically provide thousands of free software packages to their users. Some people find the tools available for browsing, selecting and installing these repositories to be hard to use. Take Synaptic on Debian GNU/Linux for example, it's a wonderful program,  but it presents the user with thousands of packages, most of which a typical home end user will no interest in installing. Plus, installing software involves queuing up the desired packages, and then telling the application to install everything queued up.

Mall Of Freedom will target people who are not interested in "packages", but interested in browsing and installing "applications". It will be a web based front end to the packaging system their distribution provides,  while avoiding the distraction of things the user isn't interested in.

There will be two major components on a running system.

1) A web application that could be run locally on the users machine, or on a remote host. This is what the user interacts with via their web browser.

2) A back end specific to the distribution in use. It will take orders from the front on what to install or remove, and operate in the background so the user can continue to browse and select while it works away. Apt and Portage back ends are planned for our first major release.
