some debug output, although I don't think it looks useful, this shows output after having been dumped off the freenode.net IRC, and then reconnecting -- the pairs of "server closed, server connecting" are alternate attempts at C-c j followed by C-c O (althought C-c O can also give the message that we are already connected.

Cancel that comment on async -- I see that it does work, but it doesn't redraw the frames so I have to do C-c r after each channel change to actually see the new channel, and C-c j joins the channel, but the channel does not appear in my channel list (menu) until someone actually speaks on that channel; once it appears on the list, I can then select it, C-c r to see it, and then join the list.

On Async, the user-list is showing me the user list from last night on #riece ircnet, not the userlist currently in my async/freenode channels.

Oh ... cancel that comment about async not connecting -- today it does work, but it also loses the connection spontaneously if left unattended.

Tested Riece with irc.ircnet.com (on #riece) and had the same behaviour: Unattendend, the connection is dropped without warning.

Also, just after the connection is dropped, riece seems to enter an unstable state where I cannot reconnect to the same server (message says I am already connected) but I cannot select or join any channels on that server (message says I am not connected); the only solution is to exit Emacs or wait.

I also tried the riece-async, but using the recommended setting ...

(("ircnet.com" :host "irc.ircnet.com")
 ("async" :host "irc.freenode.net" :function riece-async-open-network-stream)
 ("freenode.net" :service 6667 :host "irc.freenode.net"))

I get 'async' on my list of servers, but cannot connect to any services through that option.  Also, the customize-variable display of riece-server-alist will show an empty list, and pressing 'ins' for a new record will give a form that is not compatible with the above alist structure.

This may not be a bug. This may be a feature that cannot be disabled.

I am using riece with GNU Emacs 21.3 on MandrakeLinux.

With the liece client, I could login to irc.freenode.net and remain logged in for hours or even days (allowing me to capture design meetings for example)

With Riece 1.0.6, I am disconnected without warning or notice after only a few minutes of inactivity.  On the next message, all sub-frames close except the command window where the message is printed that I am not connected.

I have riece_quit_timeout set to nil; the elisp code seems to show that this option is ignored if the value evaluates to 'false' -- I have also tried values of zero and 60 with the same results.
