I still can't reproduce this. I am not getting the new file, and not the unprintable. It does screw up, though no doubt about that. the symlinked directory is created as an executable file, hm.

ecp appears to be creating another file.
Make sure you are in the adir/foo directory.
I reproduced it like so:

19:42 eoinmcl@spoon/tmp/test/adir/foo%ls
fdvf mkio nested
19:42 eoinmcl@spoon/tmp/test/adir/foo%ln -s ../../bdir/bar bar
19:42 eoinmcl@spoon/tmp/test/adir/foo%ls
bar fdvf mkio nested
19:42 eoinmcl@spoon/tmp/test/adir/foo%cd ../../
19:42 eoinmcl@spoon/tmp/test%/home/eoinmcl/ecp/src/ecp/ecp -s -R adir/ ../test
ecp: An error occured while reading file '../../bdir/bar'
Is a directory
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/test/adir/foo/fdvf
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/test/adir/foo/mkio
ecp: failed opening '/tmp/test/adir/foo/bar' (Is a directory) ==> aborting
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/test/adir/fve
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/test/adir/fvejm
19:42 eoinmcl@spoon/tmp/test%ls adir/foo
bar bar?? fdvf mkio nested

There seems to be a new zero sized file created in adir/foo

I reproduced the directory tree, and I got the same type of error, but no undisplayable character. What could cause that?

100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/foo/fdvd
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/foo/mkio
ecp: An error occured while reading file '../../bdir/bar'
Is a directory
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/fve
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/fvejm

Error message has an undisplayable character.
To reproduce, create the following directory structure.

18:44 eoinmcl@spoon/tmp/test%ls -lR
.:
total 8
drwxr-x--- 3 eoinmcl eoinmcl 4096 2006-07-11 18:43 adir
drwxr-x--- 3 eoinmcl eoinmcl 4096 2006-07-11 18:43 bdir

./adir:
total 4
drwxr-x--- 2 eoinmcl eoinmcl 4096 2006-07-11 18:43 foo
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:43 fve
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:43 fvejm

./adir/foo:
total 0
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:43 fdvf
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:43 mkio
lrwxrwxrwx 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 14 2006-07-11 18:42 nested -> ../../bdir/bar

./bdir:
total 4
drwxr-x--- 2 eoinmcl eoinmcl 4096 2006-07-11 18:42 bar
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:43 hgj
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:43 hgjghfj
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:42 sd
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:42 sddsc
-rw-r----- 1 eoinmcl eoinmcl 0 2006-07-11 18:43 sddscsdcs

./bdir/bar:
total 0

Then run
ecp -s -R adir ../copy
Output of command reads:
ecp: An error occured while reading file '../../bdir/bar'
Is a directory
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/foo/fdvf
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/foo/mkio
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/fve
100.00% 0 / 0 B ==> /tmp/copy/adir/fvejm
