Reading empty parts from a file (like when PO Box is missing) is fixed in
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnokii.git/commit/?id=dba2bd21c5bde1578cc713f759bb20271ca2fa4f

Writing to phone still doesn't work (tested with Nokia 5300).

A line like
ADR;TYPE=HOME,PREF:POBOX;Extended;Street;City;State;01234;Country
fills the entry->address.* fields, but does not add anything to the entry->subentries array. (this is code in common/vcard.c)

In common/phones/nk6510.c, only fields from subentries are added. I suppose:
a) entry->address.* fields should be added as subentries
b) or nk6510.c should take care to translate the entry->address.* fields to the phone's format.
I am using a 6230i, which only supports a single postal address subentry. So if the postal address is split among several subentries they should either be merged, or a single entry could be created directly from the entry->address.* fields.

Right now I have implemented adding the subentries as Pobox, Zipcode etc. in common/vcard.c but the code in common/phones/nk6510.c ignores those and simply creates a phone entry from the entry->address.* fields. Since this seems doing the same thing in 2 places I would like to ask for feedback here.

These are two different issues.

Writing the raw entry as per the first post
echo "Abc;;ME;357;5;9;0;0;Abc" |gnokii --writephonebook -o
doesn't fail now but you read back:
Abc;;ME;357;5
(gnokii 0.6.29 and Nokia 5300)

Reading ADR from vCards hits a bug in our use of sscanf() that doesn't match empty fields like :; or ;;
In this line
ADR;TYPE=HOME,PREF:;Extended;Street;City;State;01234;Country
the "PO Box" field is missing, however it still doesn't work even after adding it.

Ping - Is there any way to get gnokii to write "ADR" vCard properties to Nokia 6300? I've even built a validator to make sure that they are formatted according to RFC 2426, but none of them are imported.

Ditto for vCards on Nokia 6300 - I can get addresses:
$ gnokii --getphonebook ME 1 -v
GNOKII Version 0.6.18
BEGIN:VCARD
VERSION:3.0
...
ADR;TYPE=HOME,PREF:;Extended;Street;City;State;01234;Country
...

I tried copying that line verbatim into an existing vCard, but it's just ignored when importing.

The following works:

echo "Abc;;ME;357;5" |gnokii --writephonebook -o
Write Succeeded: memory type: Internal memory, loc: 357, name: Abc, number:

Adding the address manually and reading also does:

gnokii --getphonebook ME 357 -r
Abc;;ME;357;5;9;0;0;Abc

The following doesn't:

echo "Abc;;ME;357;5;9;0;0;Abc" |gnokii --writephonebook -o
Write FAILED (Data format is not valid.): memory type: Internal memory, loc: 357, name: Abc, number:
