Maybe using asynchronous calls isn't needed - it'd already help when the mouse cursor would be the famous hour glass. IIRC this can be set application-wide and is also shown when the application hangs.
The problem is that it uses synchronous ldap calls, so the program does not only appear to hang, it actually hangs when doing ldap work. So it won't display that image either. The only solution is to change the code to asynchronous ldap calls, which is quite a change.
There could also be a loading image when the LDAP server is being searched. Our company server takes ~5 seconds to respond when asked the first time, and that makes the program appear to hang.
