Makefile and Makefile.defs refer to the local CVS directory for building distributions.

Somehow, $(CVSROOT) is referenced by the lisp: make target. (And I'll be damned if I can figure out how. Sorry.) This causes the error mentioned in "Step by Step reproducibility".

Changing the definitions of the CVS variables in Makefile.def to the following (redirecting stderr) at least prevents this error from bleeding through to the user:

CVSMODULE = $(shell 2>/dev/null cat CVS/Repository)
CVSBRANCH = $(shell 2>/dev/null cvs status color-theme.el |grep "Sticky Tag:"|awk '{print $$3}'|sed 's/(none)/HEAD/')
CVSBRANCH = $(shell echo rel-$(VERSION) | tr '.' '-')
CVSROOT = $(shell 2>/dev/null cat CVS/Root)
