Maybe not exactly autodetection, since smsd uses IN or SM looking at PM_FOLDERS, it seems there's something wrong about flags but I can't see what (it looks ok with my S40 3rd that uses the right function to read SMS).

The log in the 30.txt attachment has this line that is missing from the others
Special case IN/OUTBOX in GetSMSFolderStatus!
this means that in that case smsd is using IN memory.

It works with --inbox IN.

Can you try to pass an explicit memory name to the git version?
Eg.:
smsd --inbox IN
or:
smsd --inbox ME

Valid memory names for received SMS on Nokias can be SM, ME or IN, depending on the model and driver; to see what SMS memories libgnokii sees in your phones check the output of
gnokii --showsmsfolderstatus 2>/dev/null

smsd 1.5.2 (from gnokii 0.6.31) does not work with my Nokia 6020. smsd 1.4.5 (from gnokii 0.6.30) works fine.

I tested the git version from http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnokii.git/snapshot/gnokii-master.tar.gz, it has the same problem.

My config:

port = /dev/ircomm0
model = 6020
connection = irda

[logging]
debug = on
rlpdebug = on
xdebug = off

I attached the output of smsd.
