I think that's a fair summary of what's been discussed by email and certainly what's been running around in my head.

The way ratpoison uses groups is not well documented and I fear may reside more in custom than in code. Can you (Jérémie) or anyone else offer some explicit ideas of how you see groups working in ratpoison?

In my head, a group is simply an integer attribute of a frame or window that identifies it with the UI-level thing I think of as a workspace. But nothing in the code requires that groups be used this way. The ratpoison code, however, doesn't explicitly think about workspaces, and so this mental model is not enforced in code. Anyway, this is the motivation of my question.

I don't use rpws, nor do I use a multiple head setup, thus I'd like some feedback and analysis about what is actually causing problems right now with multiple heads.

http://brokenpipe.de/misc/rpmsws might be interesting but solving the problems it hits doesn't belong to this project.  Including features from it into rpws might be appropriate though.

The same need of analysis is needed about rpws/workspaces:
- rewriting rpws in a language that doesn't pay perl's startup time could be a valid solution
- thinking of a different scheme that doesn't involve forking a heavy program for each rpws call is also valid
- including an easier support for workspaces inside ratpoison can also be an approach, but it should be nice to the current way groups can be used

Hi,

I am relativly new to ratpoison - but had also problems witj rpws and found rpmsws ( http://dokucode.de/index.php/Ratpoison_Multi_Screen_Workspaces ) which works for me within my dual head setup in the most cases.

I still have some minor issues from time to time but am not sure if its related to rpmws or another thing. (For example: it seems that from time to time the windows on a workspace are swapping to the active workspace on the other screen). But I have to analyze this deeper and for now I can live with.

The current rpws seems broken with multiple heads.  It also seems slow.  Where other window managers even animate a slide from one to another, in rp I can see each window unmap and remap.  I'd like to fix this.  Maybe I can fix rpws, maybe I'll need to do something in rp.
