Well, the font height change was necessary for compatibility with the MS rasterizer, IIRC.

Will close the bug now.

After bisecting it I see there were two regressions. The font height was intentionally changed in 2.4.6 (I really dislike the new look btw), but the color fringing/fuzziness was the fault of the new experimental cleartype subpixel hinting feature. Disabling it only leaves the font height bad.

Anyway, the main issue was my configuration mistake. This bug can be closed now, I can't seem to be able to close it myself?

When updating Freetype from 2.4.4 to 2.5.3, the looks of every font regressed pretty badly. This includes Bitstream fonts, MS fonts like Arial, Apple fonts like Aquabase.

Every font is blurrier, and there is visible color fringing. All using the same settings for both freetype versions (rgb, lcdlegacy).

I tried all possible options for hinting, autohinting, rgba, and lcdfilter to fix it, but couldn't find a working combination. Please see the screenshot for an example of this.

I will bisect this on the weekend to find the exact commit.
