Sun 12 Mar 2017 07:05:02 PM UTC, original submission:  Quote nmh currently creates temporary files in ~/mail and they often get left behind, creating litter.  Amongst the environment variables that override this is MHTMPDIR.  Consensus on the mailing list was this could be deprecated, and later removed.  POSIX defines TMPDIR and /tmp.  Temporary files should be in /tmp unless overridden by TMPDIR.
