I think Monotone should have a number of fixed aliases for commands instead of expanding arbitrarily abbreviated commands to existing commands. I just would feel comfortable to know that the alias is not likely to go away when new commands are introduced.

We have a number of fixed aliases now (including "up" as an alias for "update"). We also still have expansion for unique prefixes, which won't be going anywhere.
