Window Maker - Summary
This group is not part of the GNU Project.
Window Maker is a window manager for the X Window System. It is highly configurable and most of it can be changed through its own configuration program. You can assign keyboard shortcuts to many of it's commands, which allows users to quickly perform any window operations without moving the hands off the keyboard.
Compared to full-fledged desktop environments such as KDE and GNOME, it requires substantially less resources, allowing it to be used in low end machines quite comfortably.
Nevertheless, it has support for the NetWM window manager specification, which allows it to be used in conjunction with GNOME and KDE applications, as well as others.
There are literally hundreds of themes which change the appearance of Window Maker available in sites such as freshmeat.net In dockapps.org you can fetch many "dockapps", which are small applets that perform specific tasks or serve as system monitoring utilities.
Window Maker is written in C and has its own widget library called WINGs. It's licensed through the GPL and can be downloaded from http://windowmaker.info
