System - pII-333 128m Redhat 7.0 gcc3.2 tavrasm1.13 uISP20040311 -dprog=dapa -dlpt=0x378

The first ATmega8515 stopped responding to all commands after a programming cycle identical to about 10000 previous cycles. Program size had been growing, just reached 3660 words.  The chip was replaced, the new chip failing within twenty cycles.

Both chips return $FF,$FF,$FF for device signature. The crystal is not oscillating, all ports tristated. All circuit connections are correct. Dropping in a working chip with no further changes results in a working circuit.

I have notified Atmel as it would appear the above should not be possible.  I will replace the chip again, and try an avr910 for programming.  Any further suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
