We have noticed very poor performance when gfortran calls SGEMM. This problem affects SP2 purification (control = 2) and the recursive expansion of the Fermi operator (control = 3) since in these matrix-matrix multiplication is called many times.

So far, the problem arises only when SGEMM is called (doesn't matter which math library is used) when gfortran is the F90 compiler, and, of course, you're running in single precision. If you only have a gfortran on your machine, I suggest you run in double precision until we fix this issue.
