Currently this feature almost exists, but it's limited to gzip and bzip2 and the like, It would be useful for the user to be able to pass tar's data through an arbitrary program without resorting to pipes.

I can imagine using this for encryption while retaining us of gtar's features for changing tapes.

Or things like mbuffer to fix input performance problems not related to gtar itself.
