So far, we are simply using BibTeX to store the software citation. But it was recently recommended by Daniel Katz to use more standard citation files like codemeta.json and citation.cff. These formats can then be translated to BibTeX, but are more generic and "would better fit the overall growing software citation/metadata ecosystem" (quote from Dan).

This is a very interesting suggestion and we'll try to implement it shortly.
