Data passing through the tty driver ends up as-is in the logs, this also includes escape codes. A user being logged in on a console with TERM=linux (i.e. vc/1) generates "linux" specific escape codes, which might not be understood by other terminals. 'xterm' actually plays 'linux' generated log files, but line-drawing characters for example.
The feat req is about that rpld transcribes escape codes to terminal-independent strings (TIS), and ttyreplay generates the proper escape codes for the terminal type it runs on from those TI strings.
