I'm a bit late I know... I'm sorry.

Regarding the doctor, doctoral, doctorate disambiguation I think that it's worng at all, also in English.

Please take a look on this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctorate

In every country we have a different "meaning" or better, a different path to follow and at the end a different title.

This "doctoral" -> Dottorato (literally) that you probably mean could be translated as "ricercatore" ("""researcher""").

So just for titles:

Diplomato (secondary school)
Laureato (Bachelor)
Dottore (PhD)
Ricercatore (Doctorate/Doctoral)

Please let me know and I'll commit accordingly.

I'm here and I made a "soft-check", it's more then acceptable for now but we must absolutely check better to beautify some sentences.

I think that we can use this version without problems and correct possible mistakes after.

All points have been fixed.

I can't actually check the translation, I haven't much time (got exams all over February... :S), ask Antenore ;)

P.S: point 3: I've changed that "business Software Libero" with "affari con il Software Libero". That sounds cleaner, and is more similar to the Spanish "los negocios con Software Libre". Feel free to change it!

1.
Translate two FAQ points, which had not been translated due to I did not added such msgid. It was my fault. They are marked with "XXX-for".

2.
Replace "Free Software" by "Software Libero" as the association title does. However we do not change the "Free Software Foundation, Inc." name, etc. I have already realized it. Let me know if you disagree.

3.
Maybe
        "la filosofia Software Libero"
        "business Software Libero"
        etc.

needs a "do Software". You could look for the "Software Libero" pattern to check it.

4.
I do not know how to replace the 'business' word here:

  msgstr "Facilitare i contatti tra persone e aziende
          interessate nel business Software Libero."

I have added to the file the spanish translation:

  ### XXX-Remove-this-Spanish-translation:
  msgstr "Facilitar los contactos entre personas y compañias
          interesadas en los negocios con Software Libre."

P.S.: We should take a look to the Italian translation before announcing.

The problem was at line 1311: `nano` added a newline to the msgstr.

I usually check my .pos with msgfmt: this time I forgot it, sorry! This has been fixed now.

About the "stages": it's the same here in Italy. The problem is that here we call "Dottore" both "Doctorals" and "Postgraduates" (in some faculties for the latter). From there the difficulty to translate well "Doctoral": the Italian translation could mean both.

I'm leaving it "Dottore", since is, in my opinion, the best way to translate it.

Here at Spain,

you have to do a thesis (a.k.a. project) to get the Graduate diploma,

you have to do a thesis (a.k.a. project) to get the Postgraduate diploma, and

you have to do a thesis to get the Doctoral degree diploma.

I was thinking that maybe we should change the English "Doctoral" academic level by "Doctoral degree" academic level. Well I am not sure. Maybe "Doctoral" is OK.

Tue 26 Dec 2006 09:08:05 PM UTC, comment #18:

Wait: here in Italy, you must do a thesis to get the diploma. There isn't, as far as I know, a diploma without a thesis. This as far as I know: that means that I'm waiting for Antenore. :)

Looking into a EN-IT dictionary, I've found that "doctoral" is an adjective (as I suspected), and it means "dottorale", which means "regarding a doctor". So I think I can translate it as "Dottore".

Still leaving the XXX flag, so Antenore can check.

About "Doctoral", it mean
  "_after_ you finish the thesis"
not
  "_while_ you are doing it"

Must you fix your translation?

Solved the mistery: "Ruled out" and "Finalist" refer to the application status, not to school grades (gtranslator didn't show me the right comment, ow!).

I translated them with "Scartato" (which means more or less "Refused") and "Finalista" (like in Spanish, which means one that is at the final stage with other people, amongst which the "winner" will be decided).

The translation should now be complete.

Please let me know if I missed something still in Spanish.

David Paleino <hanska>
Tue 26 Dec 2006 08:40:43 PM UTC, comment #15:

"Graduate" and "Postgraduate" are translated into Italian as "Laureato": there are 3-yrs "laureati" and 5/6-yrs "laureati" (they're called something like "short grade" and "grade", respectively). I could translate those as "Laureato - 3 anni" and "Laureato - 5/6 anni", but doesn't sound too well.

About "Doctoral", I think I can translate it into "Dottorando", which means a person who is studying, and doing a thesis, to become a Doctor (I think this is the best translation).

I'll add those translations to the it_IT messages.po, adding a XXX: flag to let Antenore check them.

I'm still looking for the meanings of "Ruled out" and "Finalist".

From lower to higher:

1. Undergraduate
    He is studying yet at the University.

2. Graduate
    He has finished 3 years of University and get a diploma.

3. Postgraduate
    He has finished 5/6 years of University and get a diploma.

4. Doctoral
    He has finished 5/6 years of University and got his diploma. However he get into a investigation group and finish his investigation thesis and get another diploma.

There are people who do not go to the University. They can use the "Other" option. These levels, as all, are just a proposal.

I think the European Union was working on standardise the Academic levels names. I have googled for it but I do not find anything.

We can discuss about this slowly. Maybe when Victor or Antenore come back we could get their opinion.

I've got problems translating some strings:

msgid "Graduate"
msgid "Postgraduate"
msgid "Doctoral"
msgid "Ruled out"
msgid "Finalist"

The Spanish translation don't help me much: "Diplomado" would be "Diplomato" in Italian, but "Ingeniero" would be "Ingegnere", which is a degree you get after university. Moreover, "Diplomato" doesn't reflect the English "Graduate" IMHO. (maybe "Perito tecnico" should be ok, but I don't know.)
Same thing for "Postgraduate". "Licensiado" has no apparent correspondent in Italian. It would be (literally) "Licenziato", which, instead, means "fired" (when the boss fires someone from his company), or "let gone".
Same thing for the remaining strings. "Doctoral" might be "Dottore" ("doctor" in en): that is the degree you get after university in some faculties, i.e. in Medicine you become doctor, so as in Philosophy, but in Engineering you become Ingegnere ("Engineer").
"Ruled out" and "Finalist": I don't have any idea on what these two mean. I need help for this. (Maybe if you could explain me what these things mean... :P)

msgid "Having a global scope, supporting business models based on long-distance jobs. With future technologies the localisation must not be an obstacle to establish relationships about IT services. So, the goal, already got, to translate the webapp to other languages, and to support the fact that a job offer could be inserted in several languages."
msgstr "Teniendo un alcance global, facilitar los modelos de negocio basados en el teletrabajo. Con las tecnologías futuras la ubicación no debe ser un obstáculo para suministrar servicios de Tecnologías de la Información. De ahí el objetivo, ya alcanzado, de traducir el sitio web a otros lenguajes, y hacer posible que una oferta de empleo pueda ser expuesta en varios lenguajes."

msgid "To be able to subscribe your application, you have to fill the Qualification form."

msgid "Success. You have been logged authomatically. You can realize others operations in the left menu."
msgstr "Correcto. Su entrada se ha realizado automáticamente. Puede seleccionar otras operaciones en el menu de la izquierda."

- I am not sure if the below are the Italian translations

msgid "Graduate"

msgid "Doctoral"

The translation seems finished.

It needs testing: as soon as we get Italian users, we'll have our testing. ;)

I'm leaving this open, even with completion percentage == 100%, and lowering priority to 3 (low), because we only need testing.

I think it does not a difference being an Italian-English mix or an Italian-Spanish one. Maybe even an Italian-Spanish is better due to they are both Latin languages.

If keeping the two languages is better for you, leave it as it is now.

Should I delete all the es_ES strings in the it_IT messages.po?

Take a look at http://www.gnuherds.org/FS_Business_Networks.php: the last paragraph is in Spanish, since the msgstr is in Spanish (I preferred not to delete the Spanish ones, since they could help me in the translation).

Wouldn't be better having the not-yet-translated strings in English?

If you agree, just answer here, I'll `msgstr ""` all the Spanish strings, so to have an Italian-English mix, not an Italian-Spanish one.

Cheers,
David

About 96% of msgid's translated to Italian.

About 35 strings are missing (out of 1037 of CVS .po file), which I don't know how to translate or I'm too tired to translate at the moment. ;)

David

P.S.: Antenore, would you check it and look for any errors / typos / ... ? Thank you.

David Paleino <hanska>
Sat 23 Dec 2006 05:08:38 PM UTC, comment #6:

Sure Davi, you're right.

One of the problems I've encountered in website developing is that, if you use UTF-8 characters, clients with ISO-8859-1* character encoding may see strange symbols. That's why I always used the &*{grave,acute}; method, but probably my Apache is misconfigured, and those weird symbols are just my fault.

I've just updated from CVS, continuing in its translation.

Cheers,
David

P.S.: my "40%" was a rough estimate. I'll do an exact calculation as soon as I finish this "translating session" ;)

P.P.S.: ah, yes, I know how to configure my locales... and yes, I already have UTF-8... and no, I haven't got a Debian etch, I've got an unstable/experimental on my laptop. ;)

Problem:
When translating to Spanish I was unable to type UFT-8
characters as 'á'.

Solution:
Choose UTF-8 as de default character encoding at this
Debian etch host.

As root:
  # dpkg-reconfigure locales

I installed all the UTF-8 locales, leaving as default en_US.UTF-8

You can check with:

$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=

You could choose it_IT.UTF-8 as default?.

I have updated the site. I have not enabled the Italian language on the menu due to it is not finished yet. Anyway, I think Italian will be selected automatically if you access with a Italian configured browser because of your new code additions.

Only one comment which I am sure you already knows:

  The "à" are not rightly showed. The Smarty gettext translation tags {t}, etc., escape it if you do not say 'no':

       {t escape='no'

but is better just write the UTF-8 character 'á' to avoid to use
       {t escape='no'
on all tags, instead of just
       {t}

With the Spanish translation I used directly the UTF-8 character code.

P.S.: If you think we must not even allow expose the current state of the Italian language let me know, so as to disable manually and temporally the Web_Page.php change. Of course, without committing the manual change to CVS, due to your code is just right!.
