I removed all files from 'picogen/picogen/'.

It's better to submit new requests using a new bug item, because this one was already closed :)

Hello,

thank you very much for your support, Sylvain!

Say, would it be possible to reset the cvs of picogen, I have really struggled up the "primal scream"-commit.

There are namely two dir-trees (as seen here: http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewvc/picogen/?root=picogen) which shalt be pruned away, "packages" and "picogen", but a full reset would be cleaner, I guess.

It would be great if this would be possible!

Best Regards,

seb

Hi,

"GPL v3 or later" is not exactly "blanket clause" :)

In the GPL you can read:
"Such new versions will be similar in spirit to the present version, but may differ in detail to address new problems or concerns."

I approved your project. You'll receive a notification mail shortly.

Regards.

Hello Sylvain,

I see. Personally I have to say I dislike such 'blanket clauses', and I hear they are actually ignored in Germany, when it comes to law (so a software released under "GPL v2 or later" would actually be "GPL v2" in front of the law, even if there would already be a "GPL v4").

But then, my trustfullness in the FSF is big, it actually changed my way of thinking about software; I think the "or later"-clause is okay.

So, to come to a conclusion: I will patch the license of the project/source files to "GPL v3 or later", and agree to your opinion, so picogen can be hosted here.

Thank you,

Sebastian

Hi,

Jonathan pointed that your project is released under GPL v3 only (not "GPL v3 or later"). Your copyright notices say:
  version 3 of the License
instead of the usual
either version 3 of the License,
or (at your option) any later version

Licensing under the "GNU GPL v3 only" is problematic.  Would you agree to license your project under the "GNU GPL v3 or later"?

The reason for this is that when we publish the next version of the GPL, it will be important for all GPL-covered programs to advance to that new version. If you don't put this in the files now, the only way to port your program to the next version of the GPL would be to ask each and every copyright holder, and that may be very difficult.

We can explain the issue in more detail if you wish. If you have concerns about "GNU GPL v3 or later", we'd be happy to address them too.

Regards.

Apparently Zeus is not reachable at the moment.
We'll have a look asap.
Apologizes for the delay.

Hi Jonathan,

sorry, until now I did not recognize that I was not logged when I posted the last comment, so, it was me.

Have you any news yet?

Greetings

Sebastian

Hello Jonathan,

thank you.

I still want to host the project here on savannah, and my comment was just to correct my wrong choice of "GNU General Public License v2 or later" instead of "other license" in the submission form, and to add the forgotten dependency on SDL.

To clarify: picogen is GPL v3, I still want it hosted here :)

Best regards

Sebastian

i Sebastian,

I'm evaluating the project you submitted for approval in Savannah.

I'm assuming with your words that you may not want to host your
project at Savannah, because the strictly GPLv3 issue.

You can combine a software licensed under GPLv3 with a library
licensed under LGPL 2.1, that's not a problem, you may want to take a
look at
     http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html
and look for the LGPL v2.1 topic.

Are you still willing to host your project at Savannah? Please if that
is the case let us know, otherwise in a week we will delete your
project from the pending list.

Dear Administrators,

I forgot to mention that the kernel currently depends on SDL (LGPL ersion 2.1, or later, http://libsdl.org).

Plus the license of picogen is strictly GPL version 3.

Many thanks for tour efforts,

smach

Registration Details

  • Name: picogen
  • System Name:  picogen
  • Type: non-GNU software & documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v2 or later (GNU General Public License, version 3)

Description:

picogen is meant to be a terrain rendering system, that is, a graphics software to display terrain (with plants, water, etc.) in a realistic or maybe artistic way; it's name comes from the negotiation of 'terragen', a famous but unfortunately proprietary software to render terrain.

The software is of course not limitied to terrain rendering, but it may also be used for displaying e.g. Cornell Boxes or other scenes.

The name 'picogen' refers both to the rendering kernel, and to the whole set of tools that is to be created (for example a GUI (actually a long term project), a heightmap visualizer, a compiler for the scene description language 'picotera', and more).
