Needed:
Fix binutils bug #5523:
http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=5523

Patch to support mega256x devices needs to be committed to GCC.

Eric to fix binutils bug.
Anatoly to commit GCC patch.

All that is left is support for ATmega2560 and ATmega2561 in GCC. Patch is available in Patch Tracker for GCC 4.1.x. More testing is needed for overall ATmega256x support.

I created a wiki page to log the effort in implementing support for AT mega2560/AT mega2561.

Look at:

http://www.kieltech.de/uweswiki/ATmega2560_5fsupport

I tried to break the main task into subtasks, to make it easier to start.

Let's split this task in

1: mega 640-1280-1281 (easy)

and

2: mega 2560-2561 (not so easy)

OK, datasheet is wrong, below is the response from Atmel:

1. Only mega256x push 3 bytes on the stack. mega640 and mega128x push 2 bytes like previous devices.

2. The byte order for mega256x is the same as for other parts.

call:
(SP) <- low byte
(SP-1) <- high byte
(SP-2) <- extended byte

ret:
(SP+1) -> extended byte
(SP+2) -> high byte
(SP+3) -> low byte

According to the datasheet, all these devices (not just 256x - 640/128x too!) store a 3-byte PC on stack.  This means they all need GCC changes (new architecture) to be supported.  Byte order of these 3-byte addresses on stack is not documented (for 2-byte addresses it was found experimentally to be big endian - only Atmel knows why, AVR is otherwise little endian), and this matters for the indirect_jump insn (even if we limit ourselves to 16-bit pointers, an additional zero byte has to be pushed).

Changed summary to reflect that Atmel is releasing two devices: ATmega2560 and ATmega2561. This info can be found in the Help of AVR Studio, including XML files for simulating the device (which can also be used to write the IO header file).

From Bob Paddock:
---------------------
Actually there is no such thing as a ATmega256 now, they changed the nomenclature yet again, as you can find by searching the net for the ATmega2561.  There are a few variations in package and memory size, per
the public information from the seminar last year.

AVR097: Migration between ATmega128 and ATmega2561 (6 pages, revision A, updated 11/04)
"ATmega128 and ATmega2561 are designed to be a pin and functionality compatible sub family. This application note points out the differences to be aware of when porting code between the devices."

http://www.atmel.ru/Disks/AVR%20Technical%20Library/appnotes/pdf/AVR097.pdf

> From other public information on the net, such AVR Studio 4.11 release notes

we know there is a ATmega2560.  We know from AVR097 that the 2561 is a 64-pin
part, it can be deduced from the seminar material that the 2560 is the 100-pin part.  The other information has not turned up in what is publicly available yet.
