From the packaging point of view: No, that's not the best solution. Yes, it is possible to do it the way you are suggesting, but then we will have two conflicting packages (two separate packages that have same files with different content).

We do it this way for one package, audacity. But the desired solution is to ship the main package in the official repo and the patent encumbered stuff in a 3rd party repo. This has advantages: Traverso will be distributed in the official Linux distribution. People who want additional functionality can enable a 3rd party repo and install these modules. We do this for many packages, e.g. k3b, xine-lib, audacious, xmms, xmms2...

It's just a feature request. If some developer is willing, and has the time and the energy to do it...

MP3 support is optional already. It can be enabled/disabled at compile time (not at run time). AFAIK it is common practice to ship a version without restricted codec support with the main distribution, and a second version with MP3 support in a 3rd party repository (PLF/packman et al.). Is that not an acceptable solution?

Many Linux distributions that obey patent laws cannot ship mp3 encoders/decoders. Usually there are unofficial 3rd party repositories which provide these packages.

If the lame/mad support of traverso can be modularized, it would be easy for packagers to split these plugins from the main package and provide them in a 3rd party repository, while the main traverso application stays in the distribution's main repository.
