Just to confirm: are you using Ubuntu's packages for Tiger. If so, which version are you using? (3.2.3-6?)

If so, I would recommend you to upgrade to the last release of the Debian packages (3.2.3-10) available at http://packages.debian.org/sid/tiger and see if you can reproduce the issue.
