When noautobuffer is set, the command __ doesn't select the
most recent buffer but alternates between the first and second.

To view this, start vile and set noautobuffer. Open at least
three files. Then press _ to view the buffers list. Note that the
unnamed buffer is present (this may be related to this bug because
with autobuffer set this doesn't happen). By pressing _ again we
should expect to select the second file because it has a # near
his number. But instead the [unnamed] buffer is selected. Pressing __ again, the first file will be selected instead of the second.

I tried this on a Debian testing i386 with vile 9.8g.
