Agreed - the default is compiled-in, and changing it
for a file given on the command-line can be done later,
but only as a work-around.  (I'll review this area and
possibly improve it, though there's a lot of history...)

I'm using version 9.8 with the WinVile-wide-ole.exe executable.  When invoking it with a nonexisting file name, or with an empty file, vile always comes up in dos mode, even when I have

set nodos

in my vile.rc
