libattr currently looks up for a "xattr.conf" file in a single hardcoded directory (in sysconfdir). On most Linux distribution, this means `/etc/xattr.conf`.

It would be helpful for libattr to additionally lookup for read-only distribution-provided default configs, outside of `/etc`.
In particular, it could support a layered approach with priority, where the following paths are looked up in order:

  • /usr/lib/libattr/xattr.conf
  • /etc/libattr/xattr.conf
  • /run/libattr/xattr.conf


(Plus for `/etc/xattr.conf` for compatibility reasons)

Or any similar approach which allows to decouple read-only distribution defaults and runtime user customizations.
