It's not. The constant used is the limitation taken into the account by the incoming frame handling function. So no overrun.

Absolutely! If you have patches I'll be more than happy to apply.

The program (compiled with -fstack-protector) no longer has that trouble, so I think you found the cause.

However I think you have replaced one fixed limit (10) with another (32), and therefore the code is still vulnerable to an overrun, which could be exploitable in the future if someone crafts a model number greater than 32 chars.

I believe the right way to handle it is to find the real size of the model, then allocate it on the heap.  Either that or add code to truncate it so a fixed size buffer is ok.  (Maybe the code already does this, but I didn't see it).

Anyway, thank you for your help!

Please try out CVS as of now. I found one thing that could cause such behaviour.

Yes the problem still happens with gnokii from CVS:

The "stack smashing detected" usually happens when there's an overrun of a fixed sized buffer on the stack.  The check is done when the function exits.

Are you able to reproduce with current (preferably from CVS) version? 0.6.24 is a bit old.

Sun 27 Jul 2008 04:14:23 AM UTC, original submission:

How to reproduce:

1. Edit .gnokiirc as below:
2. Connect bluetooth (can browse my Nokia 6233 phone over Bluetooth from Gnome's Nautilus ok)
3. run "gnokii --identify"
4. App crashes a few seconds later

Fedora 9, fully up-to-date
