The bug seems to be fixed. Anyway, the installation procedure went fine. Installation date on Nov. 12 2012

I just tried this guide http://wiki.gnewsense.org/Projects/GNewSenseToMIPS on my Yeeloong and, of course, I've encountered this bug. After that I tried to manually wget that Release file in the terminal (Alt-F2) and wget segfaulted:

# wget http://archive.gnewsense.org/gnewsense-three/gnewsense/dists/parkes/Release
Segamentation fault

I've found out that installer's wget always crashes if I use hostnames; if I use IP addresses instead, it works alright:

# wget http://208.118.235.35/gnewsense-three/gnewsense/dists/parkes/Release

Adding "208.118.235.35 archive.gnewsense.org" to the /etc/hosts didn't help.

Just got my Yeeloong and would love to use gNewSense.
Got the one with a ZIF SSD, so debootstrapping is awfully time consuming, if even possible. Has there been any progress with this?

The problem is still present.  If there is not a fix in the works, what would be a good (or even a not so good) work-around?

John, I was in a similar situation to you. And I was rather shocked when the installer didn't work and I cared enough about it to take the time to submit a detailed bug report. I now have a fully free software GNU system running on my Yeeloong but it is Debian GNU/Linux. You can find the instructions on how to install at:
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianYeeloong/HowTo/Install
If you have an issues with installing Debian on the Yeeloong give me a shout and I'll try to help.

Is the characterization of this problem given by Karl Goetz inaccurate?  It is not clear why, after having identified the problem clearly, a solution has not yet been produced. This bug continues to be a seemingly trivial barrier to those wishing to use a well known fully free software distribution on a well known free software friendly hardware.

I am a mathematician who has recently become interested in the practical implications of free software and the so called ``GNU Philosophy". I currently have limited knowledge of bits and bobs that make up a gnewsense distribution, and wish strongly to dive headfirst into Lemote+gnewsense. This bug is preventing me and others, in a seemingly arbitrary way, from expanding our understanding of this special instance of the more general relationship between free software and hardware which respects free software.

Has any progress been made in getting a new parkes netinstaller?

This is the problem:

http://archive.gnewsense.org/gnewsense-metad/gnewsense/dists/stable/Release -O - | grep ^Codename: | cut -d' ' -f 2
Mar 20 12:48:56 choose-mirror[3963]: INFO: codename set to: parkes

in short, i set 'parkes' (our new target) to stable, but the mipsel installer is metad, the old stable. as a result it tries to download files for the wrong version of the installer, dies, and you see the result above

I hope to work on parkes netinstaller next week, i'm going to hope this doesnt bite too many people until then.

To be clear, the installer failed at this stage.

Retry - retried but failed again.

Change mirror - did not get any further because the mirror is preseeded.

Cancel - Droped to the install steps menu but, AFAIR, without this stage succeeding you can not sensibly advance.

Using the instructions at
http://wiki.gnewsense.org/Projects/GNewSenseToMIPS
which uses files at
http://archive.gnewsense.org/gnewsense-metad/installer/current/mipsel/loongson/netboot/
to install gNewSense on Lemote Yeeloong 8101B fails at the (preseeded) choosing a mirror stage with:

                                          [!!] Download installer components

The installer failed to download a file from the mirror. This may be a problem with your network, or with the mirror.
You can choose to retry the download, select a different mirror, or cancel and choose another installation method.

Downloading a file failed:
                                                  Retry
                                                  Change mirror
                                                  Cancel

This is after the stage that fails due to missing 'Release' files as described in <https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?32851> which now works.
