[field #13] Summary: Slows down or even freezes web page / have to kill firefox
[field #14] Original Submission: I have noticed this with either trunk or the latest stable version of Linterna Magica, 0.0.11.-1

On some web pages without any visible flash or videos, it seems that Linterna Magica is responsible for a freeze. I have to launch a terminal emulator and type killall…

I use Firefox beta but I don't think it's related to the beta channel. It is probably also partly due to a slow connection, on a particular day.

Two examples of partial or deep freeze, the page never completely loading:

partial freeze (the page can't be scrolled but I can move to another open tab): http://www.ldlc.com/informatique/reseau/modem-routeur/c4311/

The other one I can't really show you since it's the theme page you can see if you have a Wordpress.com blog. It's accessible from you private space where you write your articles: Appearance > Themes there you can choose a different theme. It's a rather heavy load. I tried to load this page several times, on different days, to the same result. Deep freeze.

I suppose a quick workaround would be to tell Linterna Magica which websites to inspect. So Linterna Magica would be active only on those websites. At the moment, I turn off Linterna Magica from the Extension page in Firefox. This works too.

I'm closing this bug and releasing a new stable version with the changes mentioned in comments. If the problem is still present, feel free to reopen the bug or submit a new one.

I've added a fix for Google (encrypted.google.com, http://www.google.* images.google.com) in r274 and r275.

Opening a new bug report for every issue is a good practice in general because it improves maintainability and reduces time spent (for me) looking in other reports for bugs and/or remembering issues. :) I'll do this one myself. Thanks for the offer, though.

Do we need to file another bug report for the embedded videos in Facebook?

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaving the bug report open for a while, just in case. The changes I've made are essential and might break a lot of websites, especially ones that have no hard-coded support in Linterna Mágica. I want to be sure the change is good enough to be in a stable release. If no broken websites are found, the code will be in the next stable release as it is now. Until then it is available only in trunk.

Oh, yeah, the new code fixes it in Midori as well.

The bug I was referring to in the last sentence is about the frozen browser. You asked me to test it against one of the other web browsers based on WebKit and, yes, it happened with Midori as well.

Yes, it seems Facebook made some changes and clips are not loaded by Linterna Mágica. Haven't tested does it still work with Gnash enabled. I'll open a new bug for that.

To be clear, the bug referred to in the last sentence is the lack of video playback in Facebook, right? Or is it the original bug in this report? If it is the original bug, does the new code fixes it in those browsers as well? It is a little vague right now, but I think I've tested on Facebook with Midori as well and it worked.

It doesn't freeze the browser anymore when logging into Facebook, yet embedded videos don't work. By the way the very same bug occurred with Midori, Iceweasel and Chromium.

I've added experimental code in trunk (r273) that will not process large scripts. The rules are size based and can be changed/set for every website. There is default value for the script size that work fine in my tests. Will reduce it if there are still problematic pages.

Facebook should load fine. It seems Facebook videos are not loading, but it their change and it has nothing to do with this change.

The website reported in the first comment should load fine too.

The svn builds are updated. Please test and report any problems this change introduces in working websites. Report exact broken links, if possible public ones - for example I can't test facebook pages that require login.

Thanks.

There is nothing to forgive. It is your choice and I have no right to judge. Chromium is not officially supported exactly because of the license issues. It has sources under free software licenses, but until license issues are cleared it is not in the officially supported list of browsers. I check from time to time does it work with Linterna Mágica out of curiosity and it does.

If the freeze is present in Chromium it might affect other WebKit browsers like Epiphany and Midori as well. Could you test with one of them and report back? I do not have facebook account, but I had experienced the issue on publicly available facebook pages.

I have the same problem just after having logged into Facebook. This happens with both the Firefox forks and with Chromium (please, forgive me for using Chromium, I'm just waiting for the license issue to be cleared out).

No worries. I know most issues, but users might not. Having a bug report and discussion around it is helpful.

Yes, the userscript can be edited from the Add-on page. Greasemonkey will just start the editor you configured.

Many thanks for your explanations, Ivaylo. I guessed as much. Sorry for bringing up well-known hitches.

I suppose you can also edit the Userscript from Firefox Add-on page: Userscript > Linterna Magica > Preferences

Hello,

Thanks for this bug report and others you have submitted so far. The behavior is known. It happens with pages that have script tags with large scripts in which strings are matched. As far as I know this happens only in Firefox and forks. I haven't noticed this in Epiphany or Midori.

By default Linterna Mágica runs on every page as the idea is to detect flash videos on the fly without strictly configuring desired websites. Even if a page does not have flash video clips in it, it will be scanned few times - the DOM for created objects and the script tags when there is no flash plugin installed. There is no other way to support unknown websites with regular expressions. Only few websites have hardcoded support in Linterna Mágica's source code. There was always a way to make Linterna Mágica run on specific websites. This is explained [1] in the documentation. Userscripts support two tags @include and @exclude. Their names are self-explanatory. For example adding the following in a script meta block/header:

// @exclude http://site.com
// @exclude https://site.com

will make the script not executable at site.com web page, but might run on sub-domains (sub.site.com). The rules for the include and exclude tags are explained in depth at the Greasemonkey wiki. [2] Have in mind that if you use this tags, you will have to add them to every new release by editing the userscript file. There is no way to use the helper script that keeps configurations across versions for this.

I am thinking about this problem for a long time and can't find a way to prevent this freeze. Blocking scripts by size is not desired because it might (will) break support for some websites. One option might be to detect the time since Linterna Mágica started and when few seconds had passed just give up. I am not sure yet is it technically possible to stop a running script inside the browser.
