After applying this change as a debian patch in debian package version 5.4.2+dfsg1-3, getfem unit tests run successfully on all debian supported architectures:

Thanks for this report.

It seems there are some problems with getfem-5.4.2 on BigEndian architectures, such as the s390x.

While it compiles nicely, some of the tests fail with errors like

> Singular system, pivot = 18446744073709551615

i haven't checked in depth, but the pivot number suggests a big-endian issue.

a full log of a build can be found at:

https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=getfem&arch=s390x&ver=5.4.2%2Bdfsg1-1&stamp=1667833346

For us Debian folks, this is somewhat urgent as this failure means, that the package does not enter Debian/testing (as the build fails on one of our supported architectures) and might not make it into the next Debian release (scheduled to be somewhen in the 1st half of 2023; Debian is to enter its "freeze" state in 2023-01; packages that are not in Debian/testing by then, will not be part of the release)
