Hi,
the current build system violates a number of the GNU coding standards. This is a problem, as it installs multiple empty directories and uses old Autoconf macros. I've fixed it in Gentoo and would like to get it upstreamed. Furthermore, I would strongly suggest switching to Automake, as the current setup is very cumbersome and full of boilerplate code that Automake would simplify a lot.
