NKML Nursing Knowledge Modeling Language - Summary
This group is not part of the GNU Project.
This project aims to design an XML language and application framework for development, representation, application and administration of nursing guidelines.
Nursing guidelines appear to be an essential instrument of evidence based nursing practice, similar, but not equal to evidence based medicine.
Development (life cycle) of nursing guidelines apparently includes five elementar steps:
1. Questioning
2. Research/Investigation
3. Discussion/Appraise
4. Application/Practice
5. Review/Assessment
NKML shall provide elements and instruments for all these steps of the development cycle in evidence-based nursing practice, with the classification of nursing practice (diagnoses/interventions/outcomes) being based upon a commonly accepted standard, such as ICNP® (if applicable).
The NKML project is the central part of the NKMF (Nursing Knowledge Modeling Framework) project, which was drafted as an XML application for practical application of nursing guidelines and has been used in point-of-care web services on two ICU’s for several years (Heidelberg University Clinic, Germany: 2003-2008).

The ainurse.org NKML project is now discontinued. Nevertheless, basic NKML resources (=the DTD) will remain available on http://nkml.ainurse.org (until end of 2008).
The follow-up project to NKML is called XNGL (eXtensible Nursing Guideline Language), and will be hosted by nursix.org. XNGL will fully adopt the NKML document type definition into
