Okay, I finally got it working.
I'll submit a patch.

Btw... I played around a bit with vpnc and openssl-0.9.7,
but I was only able to connect (ISAKMP finishes) and to
receive packets (they get decrypted well). I'm not able
to send packets anymore: ESP packets go out, but no IP
packet reaches the target, so it seems, they are somehow
wrong encrypted.

Unfortunately, I have no real idea about IPsec or SSL.

If someone likes, I can describe and explain the things
I've tried and why - just drop me a mail.

uhm, vpn.c:339 I meant.

There, where the #if 1 forces 0 instead of the real
block length.

vpnc does not work with openssl-0.9.7.

The EVP_EncryptUpdate() from 0.9.7 asserts inl > 0.

Therefor the assertion is thrown in
vpnc.c:336 where EVP_EncryptUpdate() is called with inl=0

I don't use Red Hat 9 at home, so I can't reproduce this.
Can you contact Bastien to get a fix (since he works at Red
Hat ...) [ https://savannah.nongnu.org/users/hadess/ ]

When I start vpnc, I get an openssl assertion:
evp_enc.c(261): OpenSSL internal error, assertion failed: inl

> 0

My system is RedHat 9.
