Corresponding source code
I use gnu make to run simulations and build firmware.
To build a ".bit" file I must first "synthesize", then
"place&route" the design. These two steps are sometimes
quite time consuming (hours), and a small change can have
a large inpact on the build time. Tracking the build time
can be good to indicate expressions that could be worth
rephrasing in the source code.
So i find my self timing the commands e.g.:
a.synt : a.vhd
time synt @< > $@
a.bit : a.synt
time par @< > $@
A useable feature to me would be a new Special Built-in Target Name: .TIME
Then I could just state:
.TIME : a.synt a.bit
and make could print out the time it took to run all commands
to make the target.
Could this be useful?
