The sv_cleaner script now sends notifications when removing idle accounts.

Well... sure?

Take my own case: I signed up on Savannah because I saw that I could potentially contribute to code I care about, but not specifically project xyz that I intended to comment on right away.  I wanted to watch, see how it is done and make sure that my first contribution was actually useful.  So I added skills, bookmarked some cool stuff and otherwise was idle.

I was also inattentive and didn't read the message about what it takes to be considered active.  So my account got harvested.  I assumed this was a bug/crash/other that ate my account.  So I signed up again.  I did this whole cycle several times and finally reached out on #savannah to figure out what was up.  An automated email telling me what was coming would have moved me to fix it.

I agree that keeping spammers out is vital, but the story above could easily have ended with the new user getting burned out on the whole process and just walking away.

We don't notify about removing idle accounts, but we could do it. I'm kind of afraid that notified people would rush to posting non-constructive things just to save their accounts.

Yeah, hard to argue with that.

I should have also mentioned that it seems implied that an account owner will be warned by email that the pruning of their account is imminent, but I'm on my fourth account creation (and I think since I opened this 'Wish' item I will be immune from more prunings) and have never received any warnings before my previous accounts were removed.

I think spammers (at least some of them) will regularly edit their account settings if it makes the account persistent.

Also, adding skills or a resume does not count towards "activity" and is similar to adding bookmarks (not bot-like activity, but a user would reasonably expect it to count as "activity").

A new user who utilizes aspects of Savannah other than filing bug reports (such as adding bookmarks or customizing their interface) might be considered "active", for the purposes of avoiding being pruned.

These are activities that matter to a regular person, but are not likely to be performed by a bot or otherwise 'bogus' user, so they would benefit the new user experience without interfering with reasonable pruning.
