Is there any further issue? Is Ironclad ready yet?

As far as I have been able to check on several projects like GNU Coreutils, GCC, and glibc, no license header is displayed at the beginning of the README. The closest I have seen is coreutils's or GNU make's formal notice at the end, thus, I have formalized a bit the statement that was already there at the end of the README, I hope that is fine.

The tarball I am sending is of updated source, but this time around changes have been done to the buildsystem, here is an updated list of dependencies:
- GPRBuild - GPL-3.0-or-later with the GCC Runtime Library exception 3.1.
- GNU GCC with Ada support - GPL-3.0-or-later with the GCC Runtime Library exception 3.1.
- GNU Binutils - GPL-3.0-or-later.
- GNU Texinfo - GPL-3.0-or-later.

It should be clear from our documentation what files should have legal notices; if it isn't clear, we should fix our documentation. Have you read it?

Hello,

I am sorry to ask, but which files are you refering to? The only possible offenders I can see are .gitignore, test/limine.cfg, and docs/.
In the case of .gitignore and limine.cfg, they are configuration files, .gitignore is for git, and limine.cfg is a configuration file for the bootloader used for testing, I will add a header to both in this new tarball.
About docs, the files held there are documentation about different parts of the kernel as said in the README. Are these files eligible for a license header, given they are not code? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, no, note "there are more files".

Hello, first of all, sorry for taking so much time to answer, I had some personal issues.

QEMU is an emulator used as a box for testing the kernel, no code or libraries are used from the project.

About README.md and LICENSE.md, I changed the markdown format to README and COPYING as specified by the development guidelines, I hope this fixes the issue.

Thank you!

So, QEMU is GPL-2.0-only, therefore it's GPLv3-incompatible; can you explain why this isn't an issue for your package?

Then, your new tar file includes no plain text copy of the GPL, README.md has no copyright notice, and there are more files lacking license and copyright notices; please read again https://savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/ValidNotices/ with extra care.

This would be the updated dependency list then, the ones denoted as testing are only used on the test targets of the makefile, and are otherwise unneeded:

- GNU Autoconf 2.69 - GPL-3.0-or-later with the Autoconf configure script exception (detailed in their COPYING.EXCEPTION file).
- GNU Make - GPL-3.0-or-later
- GNU GCC with Ada support - GPL-3.0-or-later with the GCC Runtime Library exception 3.1.
- GNU Binutils - GPL-3.0-or-later.
- GNU Xorriso (testing) - GPL-3.0-or-later.
- QEMU (testing) - GPL-2.0-only.

Thanks for pointing out those issues. About the license headers, I've added a few missing ones and better specified the license in the project's README.md. About the dependencies, I did not find an option to update the dependencies of the original project submission. Is there such an option? Or do I need to resubmit the project?
The tarball I am sending with the corrections is a later revision when compared with the previous one, with minor code changes, I hope it is not an issue.

Please make sure that all copyrightable files in your tarball
have [//savannah.gnu.org/maintenance/ValidNotices/ valid
copyright and license notices].

Please identify the licenses of your dependencies clearly.

Registration Details

  • Name: Ironclad
  • System Name:  ironclad
  • Type: non-GNU software and documentation
  • License: GNU General Public License v3 or later

Description:

Ironclad is a hobbyist kernel with the aim of running a full GNU userland.
It is written in Ada, using the GCC toolchain with GNAT and autoconf/make as its build-system.

The design is highly monolithic, and features a fresh take on VFS's as its main innovation when compared with other hobbyist kernels in the field, while trying to remain compatible with POSIX and other standards to ease porting of software.

The project is in its infancy yet, but progress is happening fast, right now work is being made for finishing a bash port.

Other Software Required:

autoconf 2.69 - GPLv3+.
GCC/GNAT - GPLv3+ with some exceptions.
binutils - GPLv3
xorriso (testing) - GPLv3
QEMU (testing) - GPLv2

Other Comments:

Right now the project is being hosted on github, where I also host a distribution of Ironclad, called Gloire, but I would love to switch to a fully open hosting solution. Just like the kernel, the distribution holds the same standards for correctness and openess.
