In my build of 0.8.006, .../python/simulavr_wrap.cpp has some includes of Python.h that are not found.  Someone who knows how to tweak configure should insert the the path to the local Python.h into the include directories of gcc.

I patched it with #include "/usr/include/python2.2/Python.h" which
seems to work on my system.
