I think this is the same bug as reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mimms/+bug/584983

I'm affected, too:
~$ mimms mms://a1197.v18792.c1879.g.vm.akamaistream.net/7/1197/1879/v0001/viewontv.download.akamai.com/1879/tv5/kiosque/kiosque_230510.wmv kiosque.wmv
Connecting ...libmms error:/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/libmimms/core.py:245: DeprecationWarning: BaseException.message has been deprecated as of Python 2.6
print >> sys.stderr, "libmms error:", e.message
libmms connection error

The stream above works perfectly with vlc or mplayer (see attachments).

I get this error only with seekable streams.
Mimms still works perfectly with non-seekable streams.

I tried the non-seekable stream generated on this page:
I can give you the mms-link, but it probably won't work because of the ridiculous security on Dutch National television broadcasts (e.g. hash functions and not being allowed to view the same broadcast twice within 24 hours).
please note that there's an ampersand (&-sign) in these links, so you'll want to put it between quotation marks

This non-seekable stream worked just fine for me:
$ mimms 'mms://emil08.omroep.nl/thema_journaal24-bb-public?/nos/journaal24-bb&md5=4731ff652f227ff3c890e962dfea0bff&t=4c67f3ba' journaal24_15-08-10.asf

I'm using Kubuntu 10.04, mimms 3.2.1 and libmms 0.4

I can't reproduce your problem, because it doesn't work for me with mplayer, vlc, xine, or mimms.

When I watch with wireshark, the server doesn't respond at all to any mms requests from any of the clients.

get libmms connection error for valid mms url. url can be retrieved with mplayer or vlc. Not a dup of https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?19884 as account has write permission.

Tried in the following configs
ubunutu 8.10
mimms 3.2.1
libmms 0.4

ubuntu 8.0.4
mimms 2.0.1
libmms 0.3

rrrr@trillian:/tmp$ mimms --version
mimms 3.2.1
rrrr@trillian:/tmp$ mimms -v mms://media.eplondemand.iinet.net.au/epl_content//20081101/20081101_VOD_EVE_FUL_1000K.WMV
