I didn't have xnest installed. I installed it, rebooted, logged in to GNOME again and tried "New Login in a Window" again, but still nothing happened. Running "gdmflexiserver -d --xnest" says:

samgee@gnewsense:~$ gdmflexiserver -d --xnest
gdmflexiserver[4283]: DEBUG: Sending command: 'VERSION'
gdmflexiserver[4283]: DEBUG: Got response: 'GDM 2.20.7'
gdmflexiserver[4283]: DEBUG: Sending command: 'AUTH_LOCAL aa3b6278850328847a4c14431710b5e4'
gdmflexiserver[4283]: DEBUG: Got response: 'OK'
gdmflexiserver[4283]: DEBUG: Sending command: 'FLEXI_XNEST :0 1000 aa3b6278850328847a4c14431710b5e4 /home/samgee/.Xauthority'

and just hangs there (I stopped it with Ctrl-C). It might be this bug http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=533166, because Switch User also doesn't work (just locks the desktop).

I don't have xnest installed - is it included by default? if its not, that explains the problem.

Its a Recommends: of gdm, but not a full dependency.

Applications -> System Tools -> New Login in a Window: pops up a window "Cannot start new display. The X server failed. Perhaps it is not configured well."
