Is this an actual bug, if a rebuild isn't required? or is the bug that 'we' want a benchmark to find out which is quicker?

if there is no splash screen displayed using one option i don't see why we'd go with it as a distro. if people want it to be that little bit quicker they can make the changes themselves.

We don't need a separate build to work without initrd.  The current builds work fine without initrd, as long as the root filesystem is in one of the filesystem types that are built into the kernel (rather than built as modules, that would have to be loaded by initrd), and the root filesystem is specified in the boot command line as say /dev/hda1, rather than by LABEL or UUID, which would also require an initrd.

Not using initrd is faster, but I noticed the splash screen with the gNewSense logo is not displayed, and boot-up proceeds in text mode.  Furthermore, during shutdown initiated from an X session, the screen gets messed up.

(rms asked me to make sure his bug reports to the mailing list got into the bug tracking system)

It would be good to build Linux for the Yeelong in two ways, one using Initrd and one not using Initrd, and see which starts up faster.  This is going to be a significant aspect of the machine's attractiveness, so it ought to be chosen the way that is best.

This affects resuming after hibernation, as well as real booting.
