I'd say not in general when it comes to big mirrors, but if hardlinking was written in as an option it would allow both to be on the same partition.

i don't know how hard it would be to check the partitions are the same before hardlinking, but if the config option for upstream+downstream are on the same device, we can probably trust it :)

Karl,

Is it safe to assume that both distro's repositories would reside in the same file system?  (Within the boundaries of the same fs?)

If that's the case - it would be appropriate for the script to simply use the "ln TARGET LINK_NAME" command, correct?

running ./update-pool downloads your two distributions from their respective repositories. if (as is the case with gNS) 99% of your archive is the same, it would be good if m-o-m would hard link instead of redownloading.
