There is no default hot-keys for game speed in Starcraft II.

Using the keycode sounds like a good solution for the group numbers.

For the game speed, ctrl+alt+MINUS is cumbersome. In that case, it should be also ctrl+alt+PLUS to increase the speed. If the key is "shifted", people may want to press the shift key too. This makes a lot of keys.

How do other RTS games handle this ?

I found a solution recovering the keycode of the pressed key (keycode = 10 to 19 for num on all the keyboards of the world).

However, on the azerty one, the MINUS key is the same of the number 6 one. So I suggest to press ctrl+alt+MINUS for decrease the game speed. Say me if you agree.

A one more thing : to accelerate the game speed, you have to press PLUS which is the shifted key of EQUAL (qwerty and azerty), so the test in the program is to check if the key pressed is EQUAL. But in several keyboards, it's another key or PLUS and EQUAL are reversed so it surely doesn't work.

The problem seems to be worst with the French AZERTY layout, where the digit keys procude letters if unshifted? With the Swedish/Finnish layout, I can define groups all right; only the unselect keys (` and ^) are missing.

Some potential fixes or workarounds:

  • When SDL reports a keypress where the keysym or the Unicode character is a digit, save the scancode from that event. If later events occur with the same scancode, treat those as that digit too, even if the Unicode character now is different because of a changed shift state.
  • Examine the keymap. SDL 1.2 doesn't seem to have functions for that, so it would have to be implemented in platform-specific code.
  • Add a keyboard layout drop-down list in the settings menu, near the language selector.
  • Define default GroupKeys strings in the PO files. This is somewhat inadvisable because people may want to play in a non-native language (because of bad translations) but with a native keyboard.

By the way, the numeric keypad does not work too. Bos uses the default behaviour of the keys and ignores Num Lock.

The numeric keys at the top of the keyboard work only for US english keyboards. For other keyboards, you have to set GroupKeys to the appropriate values in preferences.lua.

It's an annoying behaviour and I welcome improvements.

It's impossible to create groups with the numeric keys at top of the keyboard. And most of people who have got a portable computer haven't got it.
I checked the source code and I think I can find a solution of this issue.
