Parkes now has backgrounds, provided by gnome-theme-galaxia. They still have gradients, but they're more subtle. IMO, they can't be mistaken for a broken screen. Does anyone think this is still a problem?

I think this is a "general gNewSense issue," since it's the gNewSense-branded wallpapers that exhibit the bug, and IIRC they're pulled in by the gnewsense-desktop package.

I have no knowledge of anything that would help prevent things like this; on a screen that isn't matte LCD, the wallpapers look totally normal.

@Ted: thanks.

It's not a general gnewsense issue, but specific to one package.  I'm not sure which one because of some difficulties with apt-file just now.

I've got fvwm-crystal installed on yeelong-base from metad and do not have either file.

Would there be a filter or previewer that could simulate somewhat the different screen types and their effects on colors and luminosity?

Oh wow, I just noticed that.

@lars: The offending files are in /usr/share/backgrounds/gnewsense_wallpaper{5,6}.png. The fade in the middle looks like there's a problem with the screen somewhat. I hadn't noticed it, but it's clear how others might.

Design issues aside, this is probably a bad default background to have. There are others in the same folder that are certainly just as good as the others, but they avoid this issue by having a gradient along an edge instead of emanating from a single point.

Can you post an image to illustrate the problem, or post  a URL to such an image?

I sold Lemote Yeeloong laptops preinstalled with gNewSense metad at LibrePlanet 2010.

At least 5 separate customers came up to me after the sale wondering if their LCD was broken due to the gNewSense background art, which does seem to emulate somewhat what happens when LCD screens are pushed with one's finger or broken in certain ways.

So this is a request to not have any fades (have solid colors) in future version of gNewSense background art.
