Other kernels than our own are not necessarily tainted. I would think that gNewSense users who install their own kernel would pick an untainted version. The function can't distinguish between free and non-free firmware anyway.

I'll assume these messages are used mostly for good, not evil. If we find out that tainted kernels really are commonly used "in the wild" then we can still reopen this and block those messages.

This appears to only affect kernels that include the firmware. our new gnewsense packages produce:

Setting up linux-base (2.6.32-35+gnewsense1) ...
Processing triggers for man-db ...
Setting up linux-image-2.6.32-5+gnewsense1-686-bigmem (2.6.32-35+gnewsense1) ...
Running depmod.
Running update-initramfs.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5+gnewsense1-686-bigmem
Examining /etc/kernel/postinst.d.

not sure if this should be resolved incase people install tainted kernels or not - thoughts?

This is during an upgrade of a squeeze system:

[...]
Setting up linux-base (2.6.32-34squeeze1) ...
Setting up linux-image-2.6.32-5-686-bigmem (2.6.32-34squeeze1) ...
Running depmod.
Running update-initramfs.
update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-5-686-bigmem
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8168d-2.fw for module r8169
W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8168d-1.fw for module r8169
[...]

We have to check if these same errors appear running linux-libre, or if its an initramfs-tools ting.

The output is from hook-functions in that package.
