It depends on what you are doing.

1. you call storeBackup.pl without option lateLinks

There is no other program involved and therefore compression must be done locally (and is done locally).

--------------------------
2. you call storeBackup.pl with option lateLinks and later your call storeBackupUpdateBackup.pl remotely

If you use option lateCompress, then compression will be done remotely (so you transfer new files uncompressed over the network

If you do not use option lateCompress, compression is done locally by storeBackup.pl itself (and new files are transferred compressed over the network).

As the subject says: I'd like to know if the compression is done locally or remotely.
Background of the question: I don't really care about the disk space, but I would like to know if using compression will reduce the amount of data that needs to be transferred over a (potentially slow) network connection.
