Thanks for the info Winfried.
I have a few more urgent projects to complete. I still want to do this, but it may take some time.
Best, Walt

Hi Walt,

you must distinguish between a native USB connection and a serial connection using an USB2serial adapter.

Using a USB2serial adapter you transfer data via a COM port. A serial connection need to specify baud rate, stop bit, and other connection parameter. This port get identified by a COM* port, p.e. COM4.

With a native USB connection you transfer data serial as well but in data bulks. This type of connection get identified by vendor ID on product ID.

For this reasons the connection section in the device XML of DataExplorer is different.

Since you are using a MS Windows operating system you can start the "device manager" and check out while physically connecting your device if a new COM port get discovered by the OS or a USB device, for instance a HID device or similar. USB HID will be shown up in device manager as well, but is more complicated to discover by human.

Before you do not have such information you do not need to create or manipulate a new device XML.

After starting the DataExplorer you can open the preferences dialog and navigate to maintenance tab. At the top you will find a button to create launcher icons. This wiill create launcer icons on your desktop for DataExplorer and DevicePropertiesEditor. You can move the launcher were ever you want or delete manual if no longer needed.

After detecting connection type, please come back and I will describe further steps.

have a nice day, Winfried

Vielen Dank für die schnelle Antwort.
I use your DataExplorer to evaluate recycled batteries with my SkyRC MC3000.
Thank you for your effort to provide this excellent app and documentation.
I tried the DevicePropertiesEditor on the DataExplorer menu bar to add the Owon XDM1041, using the VC840 from Conrad as an example. I changed the file name and the data to the XDM1041 values, but I was not able to create a new file. I know little about programming and even less about electronics, but I will try again… and again.
In your User Guide you mention:
Will (With) the DevicePropertiesEditor started as standalone application, it is possible to type the name of the device directly, if known. Is the name unknown to the application and can not (cannot) be find (found) in the devices directory a new device properties file might (can) be created.
I put possible corrections in ().
I cannot find how to start DevicePropertiesEditor as standalone application. Can you send me a link to the DevicePropertiesEditor standalone application?
I would like to use DataExplorer with the XDM1041 as the provided software did not keep up with the firmware changes, is buggy and only logs the data onto a csv file, which has to be manipulated to provide the graphs.
Alles Gute,
Walt

Hi,
If you are not able to do it by your own, provide a communication specification for this device, please.

Without having such device and without specification it will not be possible to add support in DataExplorer.

Please tell me the idea behind connecting it to DataExplorer instead of using the already provided software?

regards, Winfried
