I see. I really just want it to NOT require the server argument. But yes, it indeed works in a more obvious way in XChat (and most other clients, which follow a similar model).

"PING" (/ping) is an irc command that requires at least one argument. If you do /quote ping, the server should reply with an error ("PING: Not enough parameters").

Some clients like irssi display same error if you do /ping without arguments. But others like xchat send ping with the current time and displays the time spent before receiving PONG from server (same thing is done in background by WeeChat to check the lag with server).

So do you want something similar to xchat?

/ping should work more like /away or other commands that work in context. of where the cursor is.

For example, if I type in /ping in freenode, I'd expect it to ping just freenode, not throw an error message telling me it requires more arguments.

I understand it allows for ping forwarding to another server and that there is an additional /pong command, but nevertheless, the command can be done in context without breaking how it interacts with /pong. Just automatically assume what the first value is, unless it is provided, much like /away does.
