I realized that I have some local changes that I was working on to fix https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/?53347
so you're right that it doesn't work correctly now on trunk.  But even after my changes, I'm going to have to make a few other changes to get it to work.

It would be helpful if you had an idea about what characters should do what.  My thought is that things like quotes and parentheses should be skipped over like spaces and then the next letter would determine whether we warn or not. So for example "something, i.e. (x)" would warn, but  "something, i.e. (X)" would not because it would think that the capital X is starting a new sentence.  That seems like it would be fairly robust.  Thoughts?

Here is the example for attached test_12.tex:

C:\Users\Ivan\Desktop\test_12>chktex test_12.tex
ChkTeX v1.7.6 - Copyright 1995-96 Jens T. Berger Thielemann.
Compiled with POSIX extended regex support.
Warning 12 in test_12.tex line 1: Interword spacing (`\ ') should perhaps be use
something, i.e. something
No errors printed; One warning printed; No user suppressed warnings; No line sup
pressed warnings.
See the manual for how to suppress some or all of these warnings/errors.

C:\Users\Ivan\Desktop\test_12>chktex --version
ChkTeX v1.7.6 - Copyright 1995-96 Jens T. Berger Thielemann.
Compiled with POSIX extended regex support.

(Installed in January through MiKTeX, no updates since then. MiKTeX is up-to-date as of yesterday.)

That actually does raise a warning for me.  What doesn't is "something, i.e. (x)".

But yes, it does seem that making a change like that would be useful.  I'll try to look into in the not too distant future.  Feel free to ping me about it if you wish.

Warning 12 is being raised on this: "something, i.e. something", but not for this one: "something, i.e. \(x\)".

Of course, not considering the semantics of "i.e.", \(x\) could start the new sentence but I think it would be more useful to raise Warning 12 here as well. What do you think?

Kind regards, Ivan
